How to Hire the Best Person For Your Graphic Design

Many businesses, especially those just starting out, might be tempted to forgo hiring a professional for their graphic design services. Perhaps many of these businesses feel that they can’t afford the luxury of high quality graphic design.

Quality graphic design, however, is far from a luxury. You might have the best product or services in your city, but if you’re trying to market your business with branding that looks homemade, then you will always face a more difficult time winning the sale.

High quality graphic design can easily pay for itself. Whether you are updating old marketing materials or creating new ones, designers can help you perfect your branding to renew interest in your products or services and to generate new leads.

Though it’s essential that your business hires a professional to do the graphic design work, it’s just as important that you know what to look for. Here are a few things to keep in mind prior to hiring a graphic designer.

1) Check references: always check the designer’s references before hiring anyone for your graphic design project. When checking references, ask if the designer was understanding of the graphic design requirements for the client you are speaking to. How did the designer handle feedback and attend to revisions? Check with a few of the designer’s clients to get an overall feel for how your project may flow.

2) Ask about initial concept designs: a good graphic design job can include several concepts to review before the final chosen concept is ready for production. Find out ahead of time an approximate number of concepts are covered in the price you are quoted. Also ask what will happen if you do not care for any of the initial concept designs.

3) Look over their portfolio: Looking through a designer’s graphic design portfolio will give you a good idea of their overall level of skill. Evaluate any similar projects you see that share qualities with your own. If you don’t care for these examples there’s a good chance this is not the right designer for you. If you don’t see anything to your liking, ask the designer if they have some other samples along the lines of what you’re seeking.

4) Make sure your graphic designer is a good listener: graphic design can be difficult, but a good listener can simplify the process. The job of the designer is to bring your vision to fruition. The best graphic design jobs must accurately express the personality of you or your business and your graphic designer must be willing to spend the needed time to listen to what you have to say, evaluate your thoughts, and create a web representation of your vision.

With any graphic design project, it’s important to precisely define the entire scope of the project, articulate milestones (which can be done in the form of check lists) and communicate exactly when you expect the project to be delivered. High quality graphic design can be expensive, but as any good business person knows, you get what you pay for. Quality design is one of the best investments you can make for your company today.
